Nonclinical development is a field that relies heavily on experience.
Even when reviewing the same finding, decisions regarding the threshold
for adversity, the establishment of the NOAEL, and the relevance of those
decisions to humans cannot be made solely by consulting textbooks and
guidelines. Ultimately, people often learn by going through situations
that others have already experienced.
The problem is that this hard-earned and valuable experience often remains
confined within individuals and companies. In Korea in particular, many
drug-development companies are relatively small and may not have dedicated
toxicology specialists or may not fully utilize their expertise. The
resulting loss of time and resources can be considerable.
Tox Round Table (TRT) is a professional learning community for toxicology
practitioners, established in October 2023 to help bridge this gap.
It combines ongoing online discussions with regular in-person workshops.
Each week, a designated moderator proposes a topic, and members freely ask
questions, share perspectives, and exchange practical knowledge.
The community follows three principles. First,
there is no participation fee.
Second, company confidential information is strictly excluded,
and discussions are limited to practical toxicology matters. Third,
the quality of a question—not a participant’s title or affiliation—determines
their voice in the discussion.
I have witnessed many occasions when a question from a newly appointed
practitioner proved more valuable than an answer from someone with 20 years
of experience.
Over the past three years, more than 230 professionals from pharmaceutical
and biotechnology companies, CROs, hospitals, universities, and regulatory
authorities have participated, generating more than 3,500 questions.
Topics have ranged from follow-up strategies for Ames-positive drug candidates
and ADA-related changes in TK exposure to digital pathology, AI-based toxicity
prediction, and genotoxicity assessment of mRNA vaccines. The range of subjects
discussed provides a meaningful record of the challenges our industry has
faced in recent years.
TRT is not a program operated by a particular institution. It is
an open community built collectively by its participants.
My role is simply to facilitate the process; the discussion always centers
on the professionals who must make real-world decisions in the field.
I will continue to support this community and help it grow.
We warmly welcome the participation of anyone interested.
Format
Participants regularly meet through an online video-conferencing platform
to present and share their views on designated topics. In-person meetings
may also be held.
In-person meetings are planned four times per year, and there are no
membership or participation fees.
Company confidential information is strictly excluded, and discussions
are limited to practical toxicology matters.
Eligibility
Anyone with at least one year of practical toxicology experience who is
willing to participate actively in discussions is welcome to join.
Moderator
Professor Woo-Chan Son; participating members may subsequently take turns
serving as moderator.
